Tema is located 30km East of Ghana's capital city, Accra and about 5° 37 minutes north of the equator. This makes Tema the closest human habitable city on the Prime Meridian to the null island: where the Equator meets the Prime Meridian.
As part of efforts in promoting domestic tourism, AbibiNsroma Foundation in collaboration with Tema Metropolitan Assembly together with Hon. Nii Noi Hanson-Nortey (Member of Parliament for Tema Central Constituency) have initiated a Zero Degrees Walk on the Prime Meridian for some selected students and teachers of second cycle institutions in the Tema Metropolis.
The maiden Tema 0° Walk was intended to give participants first hand experience on the Prime Meridian. Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey, the Mayor of Tema Metropolitan Assembly engaged the participants and called for inclusive decision making to advance the development of the metropolis with it enormous tourism potentials. Young people also have smart ideas: experience the expedition to the Prime Meridian, where the eastern and western hemispheres meet, identify the landmarks along it and come up with new proposals for consideration so together we can advance sustainably.
Participants had to use maps, compass and GPS devices to determine geographical readings of latitudes and longitudes, precisely to locate the part of Tema with it proximity to the meeting point of the Equator and the Prime Meridian, known as the null island in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean.
Miss Celestina Obeng, the Face of Tema centre of the world was amazed how teachers and students were excited trailing the Prime Meridian.
It's educative adventurous and full of fun.
